In and around the park
Does a Timanfaya National Park buggy tour go inside?
The park authority's visit rules ask visitors to travel through Timanfaya only on authorised roads and paths, a general rule for every vehicle and walker rather than one written for buggies.[1] CACT adds that exploring Parque Nacional de Timanfaya freely by car or on foot is not permitted, to protect its fragile ecosystem.[2]
The park rules do not name buggies. One operator does describe a road crossing: LanzaBuggy calls its Family Buggy as an on-road tour through Uga, Timanfaya National Park and the Natural Park of the Volcanoes, and says the route heads to La Geria after crossing the National Park.[3] On the access road to Montañas del Fuego, CACT asks visitors to remain inside the vehicle from El Taro to the car park on the Islote de Hilario.[9]
The park authority also advises anyone who hires a vehicle to leave it in the Islote de Hilario car park, since the free routes are done on foot and the guided ones on foot or aboard internal park buses.[10] MITECO's list of activities forbidden inside the park includes outdoor sports.[11] The same list forbids collecting plants, animals or rocks of any kind or size, and the park asks visitors to avoid drones, kites and balloons to protect its wildlife.[1][11]
Where Lanzarote volcano buggy tours drive
LanzaBuggy's Family Buggy makes its first stop by El Golfo at Los Hervideros, a formation of lava caves by the ocean, then crosses Timanfaya National Park and continues to La Geria, the island's main vineyard area.[3] The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza describes Los Hervideros as a stretch of cliff coast with caves and blowholes formed by the 1730-1736 eruptions and carved by erosion.[12]
The Natural Park of the Volcanoes that the Family Buggy also passes through is a separate protected area: the Ayuntamiento de Yaiza gives it 10,158.4 hectares, forming a wide ring around Timanfaya National Park.[12] H2O Sports Lanzarote's Buggy Mix Tour, from Costa Teguise, in a 4-seater buggy covers ground from 0 m to 670 m, and about 50% of it is off road.[8]
Inside the park itself, the road is part of the landscape. MITECO describes the access road as built from the same lava materials as the area, with no painted road markings, to keep it in unity with the landscape.[13] Outside the park boundary, the Gobierno de Canarias is restoring about 465 hectares of habitat in the Natural Park of the Volcanoes, in work zones that include Caldera El Cuervo, its car park, the LZ-56 road and Montaña Colorada.[14]

How long a buggy tour lasts
Buggies Lanzarote lists a 2-hour Volcano Run in a Can-Am buggy, departing from Puerto Calero 7 days a week, alongside 3-hour Can-Am tours.[7] Its Land & Sea Tour lasts 3 hours and departs every Tuesday and Friday, and its VIP Tour Road Experience lasts 1 hour.[7]
On GetYourGuide, the Guided Off-Road Volcano Buggy Tour and the Off road Guided Buggy Volcano Tour (4 / 6 seater) are both listed at 2 to 3 hours.[4][5] The On-Road Guided Buggy Volcano Tour is listed at 2.5 hours, and the 3 Hour Buggy Tour with views of the Volcano Park at 3 hours.[6][15] The 3-Hour Maverick Buggy Tour and the Guided Can-Am Trail Buggy Tour both run 3 hours, and the Puerto del Carmen Buggy Adventure 2 hours.[16][17][18]
For scale, CACT's ticket page lists the coach route included in the Montañas del Fuego general ticket at 35 minutes, while the Canary Islands park authority gives 45 minutes for the Route of the Volcanoes.[9][19]
Lanzarote buggy tour prices
On GetYourGuide, the Guided Off-Road Volcano Buggy Tour starts from US$173, the 3 Hour Buggy Tour with views of the Volcano Park from US$196, and the On-Road Guided Buggy Volcano Tour from US$207.[4][6][15] The Off road Guided Buggy Volcano Tour (4 / 6 seater) starts from US$230.[5] The Guided Can-Am Trail Buggy Tour also starts from US$196.[17]
Two more listings start higher: the 3-Hour Maverick Buggy Tour from US$265, and the Puerto del Carmen Buggy Adventure, a 2-hour tour limited to 6 participants, from US$288.[16][18] The off-road, on-road and 4 or 6 seater tours can all be reserved now and paid for later.[4][5][6]
For comparison, CACT lists the Montañas del Fuego general visit from €30.00, including the 35-minute coach route and the geothermal demonstrations, with children aged 0 to 6 entering free.[9] There are no ticket sales at the box office there: tickets must be bought online in advance.[2]

Do you need a driving licence?
For LanzaBuggy's Family Buggy, yes: there can be a maximum of 2 drivers per buggy, and each must be at least 21 years old with two years of driving licence experience.[3] H2O Sports Lanzarote sets its own rule, a minimum age of 20 to drive with a driving licence held for at least 2 years.[8]
The two rules are not the same, so a driver aged 20 with two years of licence meets H2O Sports Lanzarote's minimum but not LanzaBuggy's.[3][8] Check the rule of the operator behind the tour you book before you arrive.[8]
Passengers, seats and group sizes
Each LanzaBuggy Family Buggy can carry up to 4 people, so a family can ride together in one buggy.[3] H2O Sports Lanzarote caps its groups at 4 buggies, or 8 people, plus a guide.[8]
On GetYourGuide, the Guided Off-Road Volcano Buggy Tour is limited to 10 participants, and the Puerto del Carmen Buggy Adventure to 6.[4][18] The Off road Guided Buggy Volcano Tour names 4 and 6 seater buggies in its title and is listed as wheelchair accessible.[5]
The off-road volcano buggy, the 4 or 6 seater and the on-road tour all list pickup as available, with the options shown at booking.[4][5][6] The off-road volcano buggy has a live guide in Catalan, English, French and Spanish, the on-road tour in English and Spanish, and each allows free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.[4][5][6]
Buggy or the coach through the Fire Mountains
The Route of the Volcanoes coach tour runs through Timanfaya National Park, conceived by César Manrique and accompanied by an audio narrative.[9] CACT describes it as a route of around 14 kilometres through the main core of the eruptions, while the Canary Islands park authority gives 12 km on a circular route between 251 m and 453 m altitude.[9][19]
CACT's FAQ says the Route of the Volcanoes buses depart from Islote de Hilario every 20 minutes.[2] Around that stop, CACT says more than 25 craters are concentrated in just a few square kilometres.[9] On the coach tour, CACT says the audio guide plays in Spanish and English in its FAQ, and adds German in its What to do section.[2][9]
For comparison, LanzaBuggy's on-road route pairs its park crossing with Los Hervideros and La Geria, and the guided off-road volcano buggy on GetYourGuide runs 2 to 3 hours.[3][4]
