Timanfaya National Park is one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in the world. Its eruptions, which took place between 1730 and 1736, forever transformed the centre-west of Lanzarote

Can you cycle in Timanfaya National Park?
The park authority's visit rules ask visitors to travel through Timanfaya only on authorised roads and paths, a general rule for every vehicle and walker rather than one written for bicycles.[1] CACT adds that exploring Parque Nacional de Timanfaya freely by car or on foot is not permitted, to protect its fragile ecosystem.[12]
MITECO's list of activities forbidden inside the park includes outdoor sports.[2] The park authority's advice for visitors is that the free routes are done on foot and the guided ones on foot or aboard internal park buses, and that a hired vehicle should be left in the Islote de Hilario car park.[13]
The LZ-67 road, which connects Tinajo and Yaiza, is what gives access to the park's facilities.[13] Inside the park, MITECO describes that road as built from the same lava materials as the area, with no painted road markings, to keep it in unity with the landscape.[14] On the stretch into Montañas del Fuego, CACT asks visitors to remain inside the vehicle from El Taro to the car park on the Islote de Hilario.[10]
What a Lanzarote volcano e-bike tour covers
On GetYourGuide, the E-Bike Tour Timanfaya Volcano, Crater & Vineyards lasts 3.5 hours with a small group limited to 6 participants and a live guide in English and Spanish.[3] The Volcano Craters & Scenic Vineyards e-bike tour lasts 4 hours, also limited to 6 participants, with a guide in English and Spanish.[4] The first of the two is rated 4.92 from 11 reviews, and the second 4.90 from 150 reviews.[3][4]
Ebike Experiences Lanzarote gives 3-4 h for its Volcanoes Route, its most booked, and says an official guide certified by the Canary Islands Government leads every outing.[5] Another listing, E-bike tour in the south, runs 3.5 hours for up to 6 participants.[15]
For a longer day, the Epic E-Bike Sightseeing Tour from north to south lasts 5.5 hours, is limited to 4 participants, lists pickup and lists Mirador del Río and Playa Blanca among its stops.[16] Timanfaya's crater country is large: the Canary Islands park authority gives the lava from the eighteenth-century eruptions as a sea of about 174 km2 in the west of the island, and CACT counts more than 25 craters within a few square kilometres around Islote de Hilario.[10][17]

Vineyards and volcanoes in La Geria
The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza describes La Geria as a wide area in the centre of Lanzarote, partly covered by recent lava from the 1730-36 eruption, with volcanic cones of different heights rising above it.[18] LanzaBuggy calls it the island's main vineyard area.[6]
The vines there grow in individual pits because, according to the DO Lanzarote wine authority, the lapilli or picón layer can be up to 3 metres thick in some areas; vines in La Geria can be planted up to 4 m apart, against 1.5 to 2 m in the north.[7] UNESCO says lapilli farming lets farmers retain soil moisture and prevent erosion.[19]
Between Mozaga and Uga, in the heart of the Protected Landscape of La Geria, stands Volcán del Cuervo, the first of the Timanfaya eruptions, where the Lanzarote Film Commission says Eternals (2020) was filmed.[20] The DO Lanzarote wine authority says its vines are on average 30 to 50 years old, and the harvest is done by hand without any mechanization.[7]
How long the rides last, and who can join
On GetYourGuide, the Timanfaya volcano, crater and vineyards tour and the E-bike tour in the south both run 3.5 hours, and the volcano craters and scenic vineyards tour 4 hours.[3][4][15] Ebike Experiences Lanzarote gives 3-4 h for its Volcanoes Route.[5]
Groups stay small: each of those three GetYourGuide listings is limited to 6 participants.[3][4][15] On age, Ebike Experiences Lanzarote says minors between 12 and 17 may take part if a responsible adult accompanies them for the entire duration.[5]
The volcanic ash underfoot has local names too: the Canary Islands park authority says the small stones of 2 to 20 mm are called lapilli, picón across the Canaries and rofe on Lanzarote.[17] The 5.5-hour Epic E-Bike Sightseeing Tour lists pickup as included, with a live guide in Spanish and English.[16]

E-bike, buggy or hike
A guided off-road volcano buggy tour on GetYourGuide lasts 2 to 3 hours for up to 10 participants and starts from US$173, and the on-road buggy volcano tour lasts 2.5 hours from US$207.[9][24] Buggy drivers also meet licence rules: LanzaBuggy requires drivers aged at least 21 with two years of driving licence experience.[6]
On foot, the Hike Across Timanfaya's Volcanic Landscapes lasts 3 hours for up to 10 participants, from US$51.[8] The park's own Tremesana walk is 3.5 km, guided and free, but it is booked online at least 25-30 days in advance.[25]
To see the park interior itself, CACT lists the Montañas del Fuego general visit from €30.00, including a 35-minute coach route and the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario.[10] There are no ticket sales at the box office: tickets must be bought online in advance.[12]
Timanfaya National Park cycling: weather and etiquette
CACT's visitor guide for Montañas del Fuego recommends comfortable clothing and footwear, a cap or sun protection in summer between June and September, and warm clothing in winter between October and April, as the area is windy.[10]
AEMET's climate normals for Lanzarote Airport give 2,986 hours of sunshine a year and a daily maximum of 29.1°C in August.[11] December is the wettest month there, with 29 mm of rain and a mean temperature of 18.6°C.[11] Turismo Lanzarote puts the island average at about 21°C, with scarce rainfall and sun for practically the whole year.[26]
Inside the park, collecting plants, animals or rocks of any kind or size is forbidden, and the park asks visitors to avoid drones, kites and balloons to protect its wildlife.[1][2]
