Cruise-passenger tours that visit Timanfaya

Arrecife: Timanfaya and Green Lagoon for Cruise Passengers lists a duration of 2.5 to 5 hours, a live tour guide in English, German and Spanish, and 4.58 from 2,154 reviews, from US$57.[1] Its stops are Timanfaya National Park, the Green Lagoon, Casa Museo y Monumento al Campesino and La Geria.[1]

Timanfaya And El Golfo For Cruise Passengers (Mornings) takes 4.5 hours, with pickup included and a live guide in Spanish, English, German and French, from US$70.[2] It lists 2 pickup location options, then Timanfaya National Park, the Green Lagoon and La Geria by coach, and holds 4.59 from 1,067 reviews, with 4.8 for its guide.[2]

A longer option is Lanzarote: Day Tour for Cruise Passengers, which lists 8 hours, skip-the-ticket-line entry and 4.68 from 862 reviews, from US$92.[9] The tour booked from this site runs 9 hours with 61 pickup location options and visits Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, from US$102.[7]

Timanfaya National Park from cruise port: how long it takes

Tour lengths vary widely. The Green Lagoon tour lists 2.5 to 5 hours, the morning El Golfo tour 4.5 hours, the Day Tour for Cruise Passengers 8 hours, and the tour booked from this site 9 hours.[1][2][7][9]

The visit to Montañas del Fuego itself is described differently by each publisher. CACT's booking card shows a 90-minute slot, its visitor guide says approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and MITECO gives 45 minutes.[10][11] The general ticket includes a 35-minute coach route, while CACT's FAQ says the buses depart every 20 minutes and the tour lasts approximately 40 minutes.[5][10]

Opening hours also differ by publisher. CACT gives 09:30 to 15:45, Turismo Lanzarote's sightseeing page gives 09:00 to 16:45, and MITECO's page states 9:00 to 17:00.[10][11][12] CACT's ticket card lists the visit every day.[10]

Where cruise ships dock in Arrecife

The English-language Wikipedia describes Arrecife as a major cruise port with over 400,000 cruise passenger visits a year, and the Spanish-language Wikipedia records that the port closed 2024 with 610,176 cruise passengers, a 21% rise on the year before.[3][8]

Most cruise ships now dock at La Boca de Puerto Naos, which is closer to the city than the berths at the commercial port.[3] That cruise dock, the Muelle de Cruceros, was expanded in 2024 with a 12-million-euro investment that added 150 linear metres and a new operating ramp.[8]

The Muelle de los Mármoles is the port's main multi-purpose dock, with a berthing line over 800 metres, handling containers, bulk cargo and most regular ferry lines.[8] It sits about 3 kilometres from the city centre, and the island's main sights, Timanfaya and Jameos del Agua among them, are spread across the island, which shapes how disembarking passengers get around.[8]

Lanzarote cruise port to Timanfaya National Park on your own

From Arrecife by road, MITECO describes the route as the LZ-2 to Yaiza, then the LZ-67 towards Montañas del Fuego and Tinajo.[13] For passengers who want a car straight away, hire companies such as Cicar and TopCar keep offices and parking areas at the dockside inside the port.[8] CACT says all its centres have parking areas.[5]

There is no public transport service into the national park. Intercity buses reach Tinajo and Yaiza, and from there a taxi is needed to the points of interest.[4] Line 6 runs from Arrecife through Puerto del Carmen and Yaiza to Playa Blanca, and line 16 runs from Arrecife to La Santa via Mancha Blanca and Tinajo.[4] The park authority lists the Arrecife Radio Taxi number as 928 800 806.[4] Intercity Bus Lanzarote's rechargeable Bono card gives a 10% discount on ordinary fares and can be recharged from €5 to €50.[14]

Independent visitors need a ticket booked ahead. CACT sells no tickets at the box office, a date and time must be selected online, and visitors should arrive 15 minutes before their slot.[5][6] The €30.00 general ticket includes the coach route and the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario, and children aged 0 to 6 enter free.[10]

Timanfaya with the Green Lagoon at El Golfo

The Green Lagoon and El Golfo morning tours both list the Green Lagoon after Timanfaya National Park.[1][2] The lagoon, Charco de Los Clicos, lies on Yaiza's west coast as part of El Golfo, within the Parque Natural de Los Volcanes.[15] The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza says it is connected to the sea by underground cracks, separated from it by a sand beach, and green because of the many plant organisms suspended in the water.[15]

The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza traces its name to an edible shellfish called clicos, once abundant there, which it says died out after two turtles were released into the water.[15] The Lanzarote Film Commission says the Charco de los Clicos viewpoint has served as the backdrop for 14 films.[16]

Both tours also list La Geria, and the Green Lagoon tour adds Casa Museo y Monumento al Campesino.[1][2] La Geria covers a wide area in central Lanzarote, partly recent lava from the 1730-36 eruption, with volcanic cones of varying heights rising above it.[15]

Getting back to the ship in time

Plan around the listed tour lengths. The morning El Golfo tour lists 4.5 hours and the Green Lagoon tour 2.5 to 5 hours; compare the return with your all-aboard time when you check availability.[1][2]

Going alone has its own timing rules. CACT says a visitor arriving outside the booked slot holds a ticket that is no longer valid, with no changes or refunds, and there are no waiting areas for early arrivals.[5] If a time does not show online, the quota for that slot is already full.[5]

The Green Lagoon and El Golfo morning tours list reserve now and pay later, and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.[1][2] The tour booked from this site lists the same cancellation terms.[7]

Other Arrecife cruise excursions

Among other Lanzarote shore excursions, the Day Tour for Cruise Passengers lists a viewpoint, Jameos del Agua, the Valley of a Thousand Palms, Casa Museo y Monumento al Campesino, La Geria, Timanfaya National Park and the Green Lagoon in 8 hours.[9]

One shorter Arrecife cruise excursion is named for other sights: Jameos del Agua & North Island for Cruise Guests runs 3 hours from US$46.[17] A short excursion like this suits a port call with a tight all-aboard time, because it leaves room to walk back through Arrecife, find a coffee near the harbour and reach the gangway without watching the clock. If the volcano is the reason you came, though, the longer Timanfaya trips are the better use of the day. La Graciosa: Island Cruise with Lunch for Cruise Passengers runs 6 hours with pickup included, from US$93.[18]

CACT lists Jameos del Agua as open 10:00 to 18:00 every day of the year, with last admission at 17:15 and tickets from €17.00.[19] Cueva de los Verdes opens 09:30 to 16:45 every day, for a visit of about 50 minutes at €17.00.[20] That visit is guided in Spanish and English, through an atmosphere designed by artist Jesús Soto.[20]
